2014 closed competition finals results

Friday night finals night.
Chris Brock and Mark Knott have both showed much improvement this season and they provided a thoroughly entertaining match in the B competition final. Chris went 2-0 up playing some textbook length ball giving Mark little chance to respond. At 2-0 Chris seemed to tire and Mark clawed his way back. 3-2 to Mark in the end but there is no doubt Chris has taken a step up with his squash. A great match to watch.
The A final saw Tony Hedley prove to be too strong for Jamie Morton. Jamie couldn't produce the boast nicks as he did in the semi final and unlike that semi Tony picked up Jamie's ferocious forehand drives keeping Jamie in the backhand corner much of the game. 3-0 to Tony.
That's Tony's 7th title. A great record.
Thank you to all who helped mark games throughout the week, a great turnout this year.
Watch out for a 3 man mini league handicap early June for thosewho want to play through the summer.

2014 closed competition final

Two Exciting games were seen at the Concordia 2014 closed competition finals. First up in the B plate final, Chris Brock V Mark Knott. An epic game where Chris took the first 2 games. Mark was not to be so easily beaten and came back to make it 2-2. The final game went to the wire and was narrowly won by Mark. Well done to both players for providing such great entertainment
Then came the A trophy final. Tony Hedley V Jamie Morton. A battle of the Titans. The spectators were treated to some excellent squash. Tony showed why he has his name on the trophy more times than any one else, putting in a hard shift to win again.
Deserved thanks go to Ian McAllister who has worked hard to make the competition a success. And also thanks to all of the spectators and supporters who turned out to watch the final and the competition throughout the week.

4  great games last night to make it an interesting Friday finals night.
Mark  Knott's strength was his speed around the court and he managed to wear  down Rob Owen to win 3-1 in the first of the B competition matches.
In  the other match Nick Fecitt was simply too good for Chris Brock despite the  improvement Chris has shown this season. Nick however couldn't make the final  and forfeited the match. Chris and Mark should provide a  good B final.
In  the 'A' competition Tony Hedley overhauled Steve Goldie with a comfortable 3-0  win playing steady and controlled squash. The last game saw Jamie Morton  beat Ian McAllister 3-1 with every game won by small margins. Jamie's nicks  and ferocious forehand drives were simply too good on the  night.
If  Jamie can replicate this form the A final should be a real spectacle.
Please  come along and support the event. 6.40pm start.

Wednesday night saw 8 competitive matches in the A and  B competitions.
The lads in the B competition were up early and raring  to go. Mark Knott made full use of the tips previously offered by senior Don Pattison when he first came to the club to beat Don 3-0.
Rob Owen made short  work of beating Martin Davison 3-0 playing many great drop shots to close
off the rallies. Martin has had some tough games this week.
Dave McRae demonstrated his continued improvement however Nick Fecitt was too strong
winning 3-0. Despite dropping the 1st game Chris Brock came back to beat Andy  Pattison 3-1.
In the A competition all went with the form book. Tony Hedley  beat Rory Whaling and Ian McAllister beat Bruno Gaultier. The other 2 matches  were close. Steve Goldie had to dig deep to overhaul Dan Cussack. At 1-1 it  looked anyone's game but Steve kept it tidy and worked Dan around the court. 3-1  to Steve. Mark Livingstone and Jamie Morton put on a great display and much  effort in a 5 setter consisting of Bish Bash Bosh. No point in keeping  the ball after this !
Jamie just came through 15-12 in the 5th. Great match.
Semi finals at 6.40pm tonight although Mark Knott and Rob Owen need to play a little earlier.
Come along and support the  event

The 2nd round of the A competition took place last night
(Tuesday 29th) with one or two players showing signs of a hard season.

Keith Gray was once again (isn't he always) up against Tony Hedley. 3-0 to  Tony.
Peter Irlam was stuck in Leeds so Rory Whaling with a bye now has to  face Tony in the quarters.
Dan Cussack showed how his team squash this season has seen his game go from strength to strength, he beat Robin Ritchie 3-0.
Some great squash from Steve Goldie and Ian Morton was the tie of  the night with Ian well bandaged up. Steve went through 3-2.
Although  the last match of the night, Dave Hall narrowly lost to Jamie Morton, another  great match. Mark Livingstone beat John Ormsby (a battle of the blasters)
Bruno Gaultier beat Les Carr and Ian McAllister beat Paul Blakely.
Tonight Dan will face Steve Goldie, Jamie Morton will play Mark Livingstone and Bruno will play Ian McAllister.
The B  competition got off to a shaky start with a number of no shows. Although  injured, Graeme Sneddon put up a valiant fight to narrowly loose to Dave  Mcrae. Rob Owen's opponent couldn't make it, thanks to Rob who stayed and marked  games all night. Mark Knott beat Paul Scott, Nick Fecitt was too strong for  Peter Edney, Martin Davison just pipped Chris Brock and Andrew Pattison won  the family battle over his Dad who kindly stood in at the last minute  (another no show) With only 5 out right winners I needed 3 highest scoring  losers to go through to make the last 8, these were Chris Brock (62pts) Paul  Scott (52pts and Don Pattison (52 pts) Bill Johnson will be doing the  draw for the B' tonight at 6pm, potentially there could be some re-matches,
depends how the names come out. Even if not playing, come along.

Tony  Hedley IN County over 45's Squash team

24/3/2014

Over the weekend of Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd March 2014 our  very own Tony  Hedley represented the County over 45's Squash team  playing for a promotion  spot in Division one of the National league. The  Northumbria squad had to travel to Suffolk to play the home team as  well as Gloucestershire and  Lincolnshire. Tony's first match was a
gruelling 70 minute battle in which he  lost 3-0 to Suffolk but all three  games were close. In his 2nd game of the  weekend Tony played number 3 in  the team beating the Lincolnshire  number  3 (3-2) Injury  struck the Northumbria squad with 2  players unable to complete their  matches otherwise Northumbria could have won  promotion. Next season  perhaps.
Well done to Tony. A gutsy performance.

The 2014 Handicap competition was held on Tuesday 11th March  2014, In  the semi's Rob Owen beat Dan Cussack in straight forward fashion.  Michael  Jones beat Robin Ritchie 2-1 but only because Robin ran out of  steam.  Michael beat Rob in the final quite comfortably. Winner received his  trophy and  £40 prize while Rob collected a similar trophy and £20 for his  efforts. Thank
you to all who took part over the past month or so and special  thanks to Tony  Hedley who oversaw things on the  finals night. Look  out for the details of the  end of season closed competition.

2014 handicap qtr finals

19/2/2014

The quarter finals were played on Tuesday 18th February 2014.
Names  were drawn out of the hat on the night and some interesting contests  emerged.
First  up was Michael Jones (-1) v Ian McAllister (-16). Quite a straight forward  affair as it turned out with Michael in good form. He won the match comfortably  21-6, 21-5.
Robin  Ritchie (-2)  was drawn against David McRae (+11). David is a much improved  player this season and it looked a big ask for Robin to overhaul the  deficit in short time however he hung on in the third to win 21-18, 16-21,  21-17. There is no doubt, David had chances, but it wasn't to  be.
Jamie  Morton (-12) had a similar task playing Dan Cussack (0) This also went to the  wire in the third. Dan took the first game 21-19 but worked hard, Jamie came  back in the second 21-14. Dan
got a second wind as he has done all season in his team games and despite a  'time out' with a foot injury Dan held out and took the match 21-17.
Last  but not least, Keith Grey (+6) and Rob Owen (+7) fought out a close match with  Rob winning 21-19 and 21-20. These lads have played each other many times and  know each others strengths and weaknesses. They don't come much  closer, Keith's league game just before this match might have been  his undoing, who's to say. The semi finals and final will be  on Tuesday 11th March 2014 with a 6.40pm start, not 6pm which proved a  little early for some getting away from work. Please come along and support the  event.

Concordia Squash  Players,

There is much to report following the 1st round of this years   competition  nearly all of it good in a backhanded sort of way. Matches  were off to a  prompt 6pm start but it was clear by 8pm that time was  going to be an  issue.
Most of the matches were evenly fought and most went to 3. The  warm courts made for some long rallies and some truly  entertaining  squash.
This is how it turned out.
Jamie Morton, Dave McRae, Mark Knott Dan Cussack and Michael Jones all got through to the  knock out stage after they  managed to win both their group matches and  thus scored the maximum 84 points  (2x21 in each match)
Dave McRae  although playing off a useful +10  played some good squash and held his  nerve to win his games. A much  improved player.
Dan Cussack and  Keith Grey had their now customary battle in Group 6, Dan the victor  however it was so very close  and Keith is the current contender for the  highest scoring runner up with 81
points. Daniel Monera and Robin  Ritchie were oh so close with 80 points  each., such were the fine  margins.
The other 2 groups were unresolved after  the lights went out at 10.15pm. In group 1 Martin Davison ended with a  total of 79 points,  the group to be decided on completion of the match between  Tony Hedley  and Rob Owen. That match is evenly poised at 13-5 to Rob in
the third.
Group 4 is similar, Dave Armstrong ended with a total tally  of 77 points but  the match between Ian McAllister and Andy Lawrence is  still to finish.  The match stands at 21-18 to Ian, in the 1st, with Andy up  13-8 in the  2nd.
Both these games need to be finalised ASAP, the knock  out stage is on 18th February so there should be plenty of time.
I'll  keep you posted.
I couldn't help noticing nearly all contenders this year  paid particular  attention to the scores, last years maths might have something  to do  with that ! Cheers Don.

Concordia Squash Players,

I plan to start regular junior coaching sessions on Saturday mornings in  the new year.

If anyone has any family or friends who's children (8  years +) who may be interested in coming along can you let them know about  it.

If I can muster sufficient interest I plan to introduce an internal  junior ladder, some internal competitions and in time, an opportunity to play  against other club juniors.

Can anyone interested get in touch with me  so I have an idea of numbers and can plan accordingly.

Thank you

December Mini League 2013

16/12/2013

Click here toBeing so near to Christmas it was  no surprise that there were only 4 teams  entered in the last club competition of 2013.

The Miss-Hits were  drawn against  Cunning Stunts while McRae’s Mob played  Gangnam Style.

The Miss-Hits go through with a   total of 124 points, only 2 short  of the maximum with wins from Ian  McAllister and Tony Hedley. Chris Brock was  narrowly defeated by Dan  Cussack   in a very hard fought encounter with both players determined  to win at  all costs.

Cunning Stunts total came  to  105.

In the other match Gangnam Style were just too strong  for McRae’s mob with all 3 Gangnam players winning their  games. Well done  to Mark Knott, Keith Grey and Andy Lawrence.

There will need  to be some handicap  adjustment next time round I think.

The  final is next Thursday,  19th December, 6pm start.

Come along  and support the  event.

Some in the club are already aware that I've obtained my level 1  coaching  badge and am able to offer squash coaching. Part of the club's  development is  to re-start a junior section and offer junior sessions on a Saturday  morning to encourage younger layers into the club. Funding   is an issue.
I need a minimal amount of equipment to get started.  Rackets,  a variety of balls suitable for beginners and beyond, safety  goggles  etc.
If anyone has an old graphite racket (racketball and  mini squash  rackets also) gathering dust which I could use on a Saturday morning,  please let me know.

Team News Up to Mid October 2013

12/10/2013

I’ll start with the men’s second team who played their first home game of the campaign against Consett on Wednesday 2nd October. Doesn’t time fly.

The lads won the match 3-2 but not without drama.

Steve Goldie had a tight game against an opponent who played in a very similar style and managed to win 3-2. Nick Fecitt battled through a difficult match with a feisty opponent who made marking the game a difficult task, thank you to Don Pattison for helping out there, Nick won the game 3-2.

Bruno also won his match, 3-1 working out a wily  old fox who has much experience of team squash. Khizer came across a strong opponent loosing 3-0. Mark Livingstone also lost 3-0, this came as no surprise after being clobbered in the hand with his opponents racket in the second game which meant he could barely hold his own racket. After a tight 14-15 first game, who knows how the match might have gone.

The other two men’s teams were in action the following week with the first team away to Ashbrook, Sunderland. Ashbrook have both their 1st and 2nd team in division 1. Concordia had the easier of the two fixtures playing their 2nds on Tuesday. A comfortable 4-1 win doesn’t tell the whole story with Tony Hedley and Ian McAllister just winning 3-2. Andy Dolan once again showed his class with a display of quality squash on a very hot court. A good win for Jamie Morton also.

The men’s third team were home to Tynemouth 4ths and lost the match 2-3. The away team turned up late and this rattled Paul Blakely who was on a tight schedule playing with other things on his mind. He lost 0-3. Keith Gray also lost 0-3 against a strong opponent. Good 3-2 wins from their captain Mark Knott and Dan Cussack meant the team came away with some points.

Andy Lawrence added to the tally with two more points loosing his match 2-3 after a strong start.

Ian McAllister.

Mixed fortunes for our 3 men’s  teams this week.
The 3rd team played  Boldon away to start their very first season in the Northumbria League. Although  beaten 3-2 on the night they showed that they deserve to be in the league. Dan  Cussack showed he has the right temperament after a shaky start and turned his  game around with measured composed squash. It could have been a different result  for their captain Mark Knott who narrowly lost the 4th game 15-14 to
loose 3-1. Keith Gray showed his fighting spirit gaining 2 points for his team
losing  2-3. A strong 3-0 win also for  Peter Irlam.
They are looking forward to the  re-match at the turn of the year.

The 2nd team were also  away from home this week. Continuing their form from last season, this team is  getting stronger all the time. They beat Dunston 4-1 coping well with their  unique (hot) courts. Great result.

The men’s 1st team were  narrowly beaten at home on Thursday against an ever strong Northumberland  (Jesmond) 2nd team. Both Tony Hedley and Ian McAllister were beaten  3-2 but either match could have gone the other way. Good performances from Ian  Morton and Andy Dolan secured 6 valuable points.
At No 1 in the team Andy Dolan  played some truly magnificent top quality squash with some lengthy entertaining  rallies.

Look out for the team’s home  fixtures and come along to support their efforts.

september 2013 mini league final

Picture
Tony Hedley presenting Team Gangnam style with the mini leagues plaque
Sunday the 8th September saw some exciting squash played at  Concordia as the finals of the mini leagues took place.

Team Norfolk  and  Chance;  David MaCrae, Peter Edney and Roland Smith played Team Gangnam  Style;  Keith Gray, Andy  Lawrence and Mark Knott

In the first game Andy Lawrence played David MaCrae.  Despite a huge effort from David to stay on terms, Andy managed to claw back the  handicap points and go on to win 21-12 and  21-14.

The second game was a very close, hard  fought match between Don Pattison and Roland Smith. Don won the first game 21-20  and looked to have the match in the bag when he took the second game to 19-16.  However, Roland pulled it back to 20 all, and then took the game 21-20. The  match was decided in a gruelling 3rd game which Roland stole at the end  on  21-19.

The final match was between Keith Grey  and Peter Edney. Both players showed plenty of skill and determination and some  long rallies ensued. In the end Keith managed to keep it tight and pulled off a  well deserved victory 21-16 and 21-19.

This  sealed the victory for Team Gangnam style. Congratulations go to Andy, Don and  Keith for an excellent team effort and to David, Peter and Roland for providing  some stiff competition and an entertaining evening.

Everyone really enjoyed the competition and all look  forward to the next mini league competition. Thanks go out to Don and Mark for  scoring, and to the spectators who turned up and gave plenty of support to the  players. And a big thank you to Ian for organising it for us.

Mini Leagues 1st ROUND RESULTS

6/9/2013

Concordia Squash  Players,

My mathematics is as good as my organising skills.

In match 1, The Miss Hits  were drawn against Norfolk and Chance.
Peter Edney beat Mark Livingstone 21-8  and 21-3.
Chris Brock beat Roland Smith 21-16 and 21-19.
With the
match at 1 game all, Ian McAllister stood in for Miss Hits Tony Hedley to play  David Mcrae.
Ian just scraped through with a 21-19 21-19 win. A close  match however the total points were even closer.
Norfolk and Chance go  through to the final with 96 points against Miss Hits 95. I got that bit  correct.

Match 2. Broken Strings were drawn against Gangnan  Style.
In a nutshell my adding up was rubbish and Broken Strings are  going to be disappointed.
Both Keith Gray and Andy Lawrence won their  matches for Gangnan posting 42 points each for their team.
Keith 21-16, 18-21  and 21-13.
Andy 21-17 and 21-9
Broken Strings anchor man Dan Cussack  gave good account and managed to beat  the wily Don Pattison 21-17 and
21-15 to give his team 42 points,  however Don's points tally was  crucial.
When the best two scores of  all the players were added up the  scores were Gangnan Style 116  (42,42,32) and Broken Strings 107 (42,37,26) In  fact Gangnan Style won  by quite a margin. Apologies to the 'Broken Strings'  lads for my hasty  and rather poor adding up on the night.
The final is  at 6pm Sunday 8th September 2013.
