Ian Morton headed up ‘Morton’s Nick Flickers’ to take on Tim Gorman’s G-Strings. (See below for the team line up.)
Players were asked to wear squash attire fitting that of Les, renowned for garish pinks and oranges.
Spot prizes for the best went to Ian Morton’s disgusting blob pattern 2 piece while Peter Edney sported the most accurate Fred Perry retro look ever, taking us older players back in time, memories ! A couple of grips a piece if you were wondering.
With a 5.20pm start we managed to get 35 ten minute matches played. A round robin format meant those who wanted to play a few more games than others could do so. It was good to see Norman Jobson turn out and give Dave Macrae a run around. A life long friend and the same age as Les, Norman at Concordia Squash Club go’s back even further than 1980, a great effort.
On that note, Les’s wife Margaret and daughter Sarah also turned out to see how the tournament was going.
As always there was some good squash with many choosing to challenge their regular adversaries. (Owen/Knott, Lawrence/Knott and Edney/Irlam spring to mind)
Stand outs were Jonnie Woodhouse scoring 100pts for his team, followed by Dave Macrae, 97pts and Neil Whitfield with 80pts for theirs.
In the end we saw the G-Strings take the trophy with 744pts against 691pts for the Nick Flickers.
Of course it was the customary few beers to follow and a 18 man showing at the Indian restaurant in the village.
We shall have to do it all again next year, the small trophy just about fits in the trophy cabinet.
There will be another Handicap bash at some point in the New Year, look out for that, a similar turnout would be good.
