I'm very grateful to Roland Smith for all his efforts and expertise in setting up the website and on-line leagues.
In general terms the club is enjoying a bit of a renaissance with an increase in membership over the last 12 months. Currently the club has 70 members, that figure may well rise with a number of new enquiries this summer.
Following the last Annual General Meeting held on 26th July 2011 there are a few changes within the club.
We are now running just the one men's team in the Northumbria League. This has been due, primarily, to the loss of several good standard and experienced players with long term injuries. The men's second team has been withdrawn.
The men's 1st team are in Division 1 (just below the Premier League) and will play their home matches on Thursday evenings. You can see the fixture list on the Northumbria website www.northumbriasquash.co.uk
Ladies squash is also represented at Concordia in the Northumbria leagues in the form of the 'Gosforth Exiles' who play their home games at Concordia. You may hear from Lesley Old their team captain, on this website soon.
The next committee meeting will determine the dates for the Handicap Competition (usually late January) and the end of season Closed Competition. Watch out for those dates.
Last season we introduced coaching sessions which were aimed at the newer and novice members of the club however the sessions were only taken up by a handful of determined old hands who just love to play squash.
The club will be looking at coaching one again and wish to encourage those in the lower leagues to come along, the costs are minimal however the club will no longer be able to subsidise those sessions as they had been previously.
The coaching is normally taken by Ray Rycroft, a nationally acredited squash coach who also coaches at Tynemouth Squash Club, it may take a little while to organise, Ray's availability will be an issue.
Roland will continue to run the squash 'ladder' throughout the season however the introduction of the on line leagues and it's easy access and result updates by individual players should make life a little easier for all. Don't forget that there is no longer a 5 point bonus for those who play all there games, the system does not allow it.
Hopefully all games will be played without such an incentive being needed.
The season's new leagues commence on 1st September 2011, please make every effort to play all your league games, general feedback from the leagues last year was that several players made no effort to arrange games and on occassions didn't even return calls from those doing so.
The membership fees remain at £20.00. Prompt payment would be appreciated.
The centre have asked me to remind players that squash club members should also be members of the centre. That is a matter for yourself.
I shall continue with regular updates via the good old e-mail system and notices at the back of the courts.
Enjoy your squash.
Ian McAllister.
