Tony  Hedley IN County over 45's Squash team

24/3/2014

Over the weekend of Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd March 2014 our  very own Tony  Hedley represented the County over 45's Squash team  playing for a promotion  spot in Division one of the National league. The  Northumbria squad had to travel to Suffolk to play the home team as  well as Gloucestershire and  Lincolnshire. Tony's first match was a
gruelling 70 minute battle in which he  lost 3-0 to Suffolk but all three  games were close. In his 2nd game of the  weekend Tony played number 3 in  the team beating the Lincolnshire  number  3 (3-2) Injury  struck the Northumbria squad with 2  players unable to complete their  matches otherwise Northumbria could have won  promotion. Next season  perhaps.
Well done to Tony. A gutsy performance.

Mixed fortunes for our 3 men’s  teams this week.
The 3rd team played  Boldon away to start their very first season in the Northumbria League. Although  beaten 3-2 on the night they showed that they deserve to be in the league. Dan  Cussack showed he has the right temperament after a shaky start and turned his  game around with measured composed squash. It could have been a different result  for their captain Mark Knott who narrowly lost the 4th game 15-14 to
loose 3-1. Keith Gray showed his fighting spirit gaining 2 points for his team
losing  2-3. A strong 3-0 win also for  Peter Irlam.
They are looking forward to the  re-match at the turn of the year.

The 2nd team were also  away from home this week. Continuing their form from last season, this team is  getting stronger all the time. They beat Dunston 4-1 coping well with their  unique (hot) courts. Great result.

The men’s 1st team were  narrowly beaten at home on Thursday against an ever strong Northumberland  (Jesmond) 2nd team. Both Tony Hedley and Ian McAllister were beaten  3-2 but either match could have gone the other way. Good performances from Ian  Morton and Andy Dolan secured 6 valuable points.
At No 1 in the team Andy Dolan  played some truly magnificent top quality squash with some lengthy entertaining  rallies.

Look out for the team’s home  fixtures and come along to support their efforts.

Concordia Squash Players,
In a world of  internet websites, blogs, twitter, facebook and heaven knows how many other
means of communicating that I haven't got my head round yet, I was surprised to   receive a bundle of good old fashioned newspapers in the post.
The new  publication of the Professional Squash Association called 'Squash-Xtra' has been  sent to squash clubs around the country. I have put our club copies on the  counter to the left of Concordia reception. Please take a copy next time you are
passing.
The newspaper has some good coaching tips, interesting articles on  past masters and some injury advice. Well worth a read.
If you are not  throwing red roses over a candle lit dinner table our men's 1st team are playing  at home tonight (Thursday 14th Feb') you will see some top quality squash.
7.20pm start.

Men's Second Team

Morning.

As a follow up to Ian McAllister’s original e mail we are now in the stages of organising the 2nd team for the forthcoming season.

There are a few who have responded and I would just like to clarify if there are any other members who would like to put their name forward for selection.

Apologies to those who have responded already and “thank you”, your names are already down to play, but I was just wondering if anyone else wanted to “throw their hat in the ring”?

I guess as a novice team we do not know what to expect but I do feel we have enough quality in the leagues to compete competitively in a team environment.

The commitment required is a Weds evening every other week as these are when we will play home games and 1 night the following week which needs to be flexible as there are no set days for away games.

I guess what I am asking is that if you fancy playing in a team scenario and ultimately improving your game whilst playing different venues and different players then can you let me know ASAP as the deadline for submission is fast approaching and we need to let the league know if we are to enter a 2ndteam.

We would also be looking to organising some training sessions as well involving improving fitness levels and racquet skills – I know Andy Lawrence and Keith Gray enjoy these, not sure if Ian McAllister feels the same at the end!!!

I myself have not played team squash before but I am looking forward to the challenge and I am told the “social” aspect is gratifying too – sounds good!

Once again, thanks to those who have already replied but if anyone else is interested please could they respond ASAP.

Cheers

Mark Livingstone.

Men's Second Team

Concordia squash players,
I'm not the 1st team captain so nothing is cast in stone but I believe it likely that Ian Morton and Steve Goldie along with Norman
Jobson and Les Carr will be asked to play in the men's 1st team on a regular basis. That team are in Division 1 in the Northumbria league. A tough place to be.
I have the following names of those who have expressed an interest in playing for a men's 2nd team who as a novice team would go into the lower Northumbria leagues.
Graeme Pegman, Mark Knott, Dave Hall, Michael Jones, Andrew Botham, Mark Livingstone and Nick Fecitt.
Peter Archibold also but on a limited basis in the light of mid-week work commitments up until Christmas.
Peter Edney and Andy Lawrence have also put their names in the hat.
Could those interested (whether named above or not) attend Concordia bar at 8pm on Wednesday 25th July for a very short meeting so I can outline
what a season of team squash entails.
Apologies to those who have played team squash already. (Granny, eggs or some such saying)
Cheers

As a result there are some dates for you to make a note  of.

The Handicap competition
will run during the latter part of  January 2012. The first round, consisting of the three man round robin format  used previously will be on Monday 23rd January AND Tuesday 24th January 2012,  6.40pm start. This should offer a little flexibility for those who find it  difficult to commit to one particular night.

The winner from each group will go through to the knock out  stages to be held the following Mondays (30th January and 6th February 2012)

The final is likely to be Friday 10th February 2012 however this  will depend largely on the number of  entries.

The handicap system will be broadly based on league position  however I may use some discretion as some players are well out of  position.

Entry is free. Cash prizes for the winner and runner-up.

There will be a notice behind the courts at Concordia to post  your entries or you can e-mail Ian McAllister. Entries for the handicap must be  received by December 23rd.

The end of season Closed Competition
will be held during the week  commencing Monday 23rd April 2012, subsequent rounds to take place each night  during that week.

Again, depending upon the number of entries, the final will be on  Thursday or Friday of that week ( 26th or 27th  April)

There will be the 'A' competition with the first round losers  going into the 'B' competition to commence the following night thus all players  are guaranteed at least 2 games.

Entry is free and there will be prizes for the A and B  competition winners and runners-up. Look out for the notices and e-mail nearer  the time for entries.

The new website link
in use for posting your league results has  thrown up one or two issues which needed  clarifying.

Hopefully these issues will resolve themselves with the following  guidelines.

Injured players must let Roland our league secretary and recent  arbitrator, (with the wisdom of Solomon he is qualified) know that they are in  fact injured and will not be able to play all their league games that session.  No players will score points from this injured player whether they played their  game or not. Harsh but the fairest way.

Claims are only to be made in the most extreme circumstances;  i.e. a last minute cancelation with no time left to rearrange their  match.

If at the end of the league session players are level on points  then points scored 'against' will be used. If this is also equal (unlikely but  possible) then the winner of their individual match will be used. If that was  also a draw then the player having played most games wins, failing that, we  might employ a coin of the realm.

Roland is looking at ways of introducing a bonus points system  into the computer programme to encourage players to arrange and play all their  games.

A quick note about Concordia men's first team's progress this  season.

After a good start in Division 1 with the first four matches won,  one or two injuries have crept in and a weakened team has faltered losing their  last two fixtures against Westoe and Alnwick.

You can see the first team playing their home games on Thursday  evenings, 7.20pm start, their next home game being on Thursday 17th November  against Northern.

Your support would be very much appreciated.

Cheers

Ian Mc
