Men's Second Team

27/7/2012

Concordia squash players,
I'm not the 1st team captain so nothing is cast in stone but I believe it likely that Ian Morton and Steve Goldie along with Norman
Jobson and Les Carr will be asked to play in the men's 1st team on a regular basis. That team are in Division 1 in the Northumbria league. A tough place to be.
I have the following names of those who have expressed an interest in playing for a men's 2nd team who as a novice team would go into the lower Northumbria leagues.
Graeme Pegman, Mark Knott, Dave Hall, Michael Jones, Andrew Botham, Mark Livingstone and Nick Fecitt.
Peter Archibold also but on a limited basis in the light of mid-week work commitments up until Christmas.
Peter Edney and Andy Lawrence have also put their names in the hat.
Could those interested (whether named above or not) attend Concordia bar at 8pm on Wednesday 25th July for a very short meeting so I can outline
what a season of team squash entails.
Apologies to those who have played team squash already. (Granny, eggs or some such saying)
Cheers

AGM, New Squash Team, New T shirts and more!

22/6/2012

Concordia Squash Players,
Following the AGM on Wednesday 20th June 2012, one or two issues were raised. Hence this e-mail.

Part of the club's constitution (dating back to 1977) was to encourage team squash.
Consideration is being given to entering a new Concordia team into the Northumbria League.
The team would be put into the lowest County league and is aimed at bringing in Concordia players of any standard.
If there are any members out there interested in committing to the 2012/2013 team squash season, please let me know ASAP.
I believe that a core of at least 8 or 9 players would be required to field a 5 man team for the season (work commitments and injuries always take their toll)
Prior to this idea being taken further I will need to hold a meeting with those interested to give an overview of what team squash entails, if after that there are sufficient people interested then we'll give it a go. I'm looking for a captain as well !

Also ;  T-shirts with the Concordia Squash Club Logo.
As part of a Handicap competition several years ago, we offered T-shirts. (free T-shirt but £5.00 entry fee which covered the cost of the shirt)
There were some left over but all have now been sold, at cost by the way.
Many of you may have seen or are still wearing those grey Concordia shirts. They have lasted well.

If there is sufficient interest the club will place another order. I believe the minimum order is 25 but I may be wrong.
In order to keep costs down (work on approx' £7.00 a shirt at worst) we may be confined to one colour. Can't please all of the people all of the time so the majority rule would have to apply.
Can you let me know about the T-shirt idea one way or the other.  If yes, what colour and what size? Medium, large, extra large and extra extra large are the options. Bear in mind the sizes were not generous and most of our club members wouldn't look bad in an extra large. Medium is out of the question for most of us.  Sorry.
By the way, this is not about profit, more about encouraging membership. The price of the shirt will be 'at cost'.
Enjoy your squash.

Concordia Squash Club Competition Finals Night

28/4/2012

Concordia Squash Players,
After a fairly full and successful week of competition squash at Concordia the finals were played last night (Friday)
Steve Goldie proved too strong for Dan Cussack on the night in the B competition. Dan did show his ability to retrieve and pick up what looked 'impossible drop shots' , he just couldn't keep it going as tiredness set in after a full week of tough games. The younger man won 3-0. Well played Steve with a new name on cup.
The A competition didn't disappoint with an excellent display of top quality squash from both Tony Hedley and Richard McAllister.
Richard seemed to go on court with a game plan keeping pace on the ball much of the time. Tony's ability to stay in the rallies, mix up the flow and frustrate his opponent showed throughout the game although his bandaged calf didn't go unnoticed. A contrast in styles porduced an excellent contest.
Richard won the game 3-1.
It was good to see a good number of spectators and supporters to watch these matches adding an atmosphers which made for a great finale to the season.
Thank you to Dave Buckle for marking Tony and Richard's game on the spur of the moment, he did an excellent job.

Enjoy your squash.

The Final line up

27/4/2012

Concordia Squash Players,
The A and B competition semi finals took place last night (Thursday)
Dan Cussack put in an excellent performance to beat Graeme Sneddon 3-1
Steve Goldie beat Andy Lawrence 3-0 however that score line doesn't tell the whole story. Two of the games went to 10
and both players had game ball several times. Steve just managed to see the games out to go through to the B final.
In the A competition Richard McAllister beat Mark Livingstone 3-0 and Tony Hedley beat Ian Morton 3-0.
Both finals are tonight (Friday 27th) kick off at 6.40pm.
Please come along and support the event.

Squash Comp Results and Semi final draws

26/4/2012

Concordia Squash Players,
The draw for the B competition had to be slightly re-drafted last night after a number of withdrawals.
Six matches were played with the 6 winners going through plus the two highest scoring losers.
Those eight were then re-drawn for a second round, also played last night.
This was the second round draw and result.
Graeme Sneddon bt Dave Armstrong   2-1
Dan Cussack bt Roland Smith   2-1
Andy Lawrence bt Peter Edney 2-1
Steve Goldie bt Martin Davison 2-0
All four matches were fiercely fought with much effort, particularly since all 4 players had already played a tough 1st round match.
The semi finals are played tonight. (Thursday) G. Sneddon plays D. Cussack and A. Lawrence plays S. Goldie.

In the A competition, Tony Hedley was given a bye (another result of withdrawals) Richard McAllister bt Dave Buckle, Ian Morton bt Robin Ritchie
and Mark Livingstone bt Keith Gray. The A competition semi finals are also being played tonight.
Please come along and support the event.  6.40pm start. The bar is open.

Competition draw

11/4/2012

Concordia Squash Players,
The draw was carried out at the Brockwell Seam Tuesday night, drawn independently by Phil George and Ashley Thompson, overseen
by scrutineer Bobby Ball. Thank you to them for their assistance. This is how the draw came out.
Preliminary round to be held on Monday 23rd April.
1. Roland Smith        v         Ian Morton
2. Andy Lawrence     v         Robin Ritchie
3. Bruno Gaultier      v         Chris Brock
4. Graeme Sneddon  v         Dave Cummings
5. Steve Lavery        v         Dave Armstrong
6. Mark Livingstone  v         Andy Pattison
7. Nick Fecitt           v         Martin Davison
8. Neil Taylor          v         Chris Thompson.
The winners go into the main competition on Tuesday 24th April. The losers go into the B competion on Wednesday 25th.
The losers of the A competition (Tuesday) will also go into the B competition.
Those successful in the B competiton will have to play a second game on that Wednesday night to sort out who goes through
to the semi's on Thursday. For this reason B competition games will be best of 3 and not best of 5.
Hope this all makes sense.

Concordia Squash Players,
I have 24 entries for the draw. I will have to have a preliminary round on Monday night.  This will be 16 names out of the hat. The 8 winners will join the first round of the A competition on Tuesday while the losers will join those in the first round of the B competition on Wednesday. The B competition will have 16 players to battle it out for only 4 places to go through to the semi's on Thursday. The winners of the 'B' 1st round will have to play again on the Wednesday night, with this in mind, B competition games will be best of 3 and not best of 5.  I will do the draw over the Easter weekend, not sure where yet since Concordia is shut much of the time. Rest assured it will be carried out independently with others present in the interest of integrity.I will keep you posted.  Those in the draw, in no particular order;Peter Edney, Andy Pattison, Neil Taylor, Steve Lavery, Nick Fecitt, Mark Livingstone, Keith Gray, Dan Cussack, Robin Ritchie, Don Pattison, Martin DavisonIan Morton, Tony Hedley, Graeme Sneddon, Dave Armstrong, Richard McAllister, Dave Cummings, Andy Lawrence, Chris Thompson, Roland Smith,Dave Buckle, Bruno Gaultier, Steve Goldie, Chris Brock. Ian Mc

2012 Closed Competition

4/4/2012

Concordia Squash Players,
The end of the season is just about upon us. Easter has sort of crept up.
Our 2012 Closed Competition is scheduled for Monday 23rd April 2012 getting the Easter break is out of the way.
The A Competition first round will be held on that Monday 23rd April with all losers eligible to enter the B Competition starting on Tuesday 24th April.
Subsequent rounds will be scheduled throughout that week dependant upon numbers with the finals on Friday 27th April.

The competition is free to enter with cash prizes for the winners and runners up in both A and B competitions.
Can I have your entries before Good Friday 6th April 2012.  (so I can book the courts depending on numbers.)

After some positive feedback following the Handicap Competition can I encourage players of all standards to enter and have a go.
If nothing else it gives players an opportunity to play those at a different level. It can only bring your game on.
Enjoy your squash

Concordia Handicap Competition Final Results

10/3/2012

I thought it might be difficult writing a report on the final in which I played but actually it was very easy. I lost.
This was the tale of 2 Ian's so I'll  refer to them by surname.
Morton had already demonstrated his quality squash in the early rounds dispatching Dave Armstrong and Andy Lawrence (both a handful)
He also showed that he had the stamina to go with his ability when he denied Tony Hedley his chance of a fourth title in their semi.

McAllister was going to have to be somewhere near his best throughout the match to have any chance in this Final encounter with -16 against Morton's -2.

In the first game McAllister's risky drop shots stayed up and a few nicks at the back of the court came his way and he managed to take the first game

21-18. The next two games were a different story. McAllister's drop shots  were better read and retrieved by Morton who showed his quickness around the court with no sign of him letting up. McAllister was made to work very hard  for every point and that took it's toll. Tiredness and the errors that usually go with it, crept in.  Morton rapped up those two games with relative ease  winning 21-4 and 21-11 to win the match 2-1. Ian Morton took away the trophy and £40.00 prize after an excellent display of orthodox squash played to a high  standard.

Thank you yet again to Derek Railston who marked the game.

Watch out for the Closed Competition around April time.

As a result there are some dates for you to make a note  of.

The Handicap competition
will run during the latter part of  January 2012. The first round, consisting of the three man round robin format  used previously will be on Monday 23rd January AND Tuesday 24th January 2012,  6.40pm start. This should offer a little flexibility for those who find it  difficult to commit to one particular night.

The winner from each group will go through to the knock out  stages to be held the following Mondays (30th January and 6th February 2012)

The final is likely to be Friday 10th February 2012 however this  will depend largely on the number of  entries.

The handicap system will be broadly based on league position  however I may use some discretion as some players are well out of  position.

Entry is free. Cash prizes for the winner and runner-up.

There will be a notice behind the courts at Concordia to post  your entries or you can e-mail Ian McAllister. Entries for the handicap must be  received by December 23rd.

The end of season Closed Competition
will be held during the week  commencing Monday 23rd April 2012, subsequent rounds to take place each night  during that week.

Again, depending upon the number of entries, the final will be on  Thursday or Friday of that week ( 26th or 27th  April)

There will be the 'A' competition with the first round losers  going into the 'B' competition to commence the following night thus all players  are guaranteed at least 2 games.

Entry is free and there will be prizes for the A and B  competition winners and runners-up. Look out for the notices and e-mail nearer  the time for entries.

The new website link
in use for posting your league results has  thrown up one or two issues which needed  clarifying.

Hopefully these issues will resolve themselves with the following  guidelines.

Injured players must let Roland our league secretary and recent  arbitrator, (with the wisdom of Solomon he is qualified) know that they are in  fact injured and will not be able to play all their league games that session.  No players will score points from this injured player whether they played their  game or not. Harsh but the fairest way.

Claims are only to be made in the most extreme circumstances;  i.e. a last minute cancelation with no time left to rearrange their  match.

If at the end of the league session players are level on points  then points scored 'against' will be used. If this is also equal (unlikely but  possible) then the winner of their individual match will be used. If that was  also a draw then the player having played most games wins, failing that, we  might employ a coin of the realm.

Roland is looking at ways of introducing a bonus points system  into the computer programme to encourage players to arrange and play all their  games.

A quick note about Concordia men's first team's progress this  season.

After a good start in Division 1 with the first four matches won,  one or two injuries have crept in and a weakened team has faltered losing their  last two fixtures against Westoe and Alnwick.

You can see the first team playing their home games on Thursday  evenings, 7.20pm start, their next home game being on Thursday 17th November  against Northern.

Your support would be very much appreciated.

Cheers

Ladies Team

I am the Team Captain for Gosforth Exiles and we have been playing our home matches at Concordia for about 15 years.

We play in the Northumbria leagues for the Ladies. Last season we recruited a squad of 9 ladies to play. The league consisted of 9 teams and at the end of the season we were a comfortable 4th. Key players were injured at the beginning of last year and hopefully this year we will start the season in a much better position.
If anyone feels they would like to play Ladies team squash please feel free to contact me. (Ladies only!)

Secretary's Report.

9/8/2011

The introduction of Concordia Squash Club's new Website brings the club into the modern age and offers me an opportunity to let people know what we are all about.
I'm very grateful to Roland Smith for all his efforts and expertise in setting up the website and on-line leagues.
In general terms the club is enjoying a bit of a renaissance with an increase in membership over the last 12 months. Currently the club has 70 members, that figure may well rise with a number of new enquiries this summer.
Following the last Annual General Meeting held on 26th July 2011 there are a few changes within the club.
We are now running just the one men's team in the Northumbria League. This has been due, primarily, to the loss of several good standard and experienced players with long term injuries. The men's second team has been withdrawn.
The men's 1st team are in Division 1 (just below the Premier League) and will play their home matches on Thursday evenings. You can see the fixture list on the Northumbria website www.northumbriasquash.co.uk
Ladies squash is also represented at Concordia in the Northumbria leagues in the form of the 'Gosforth Exiles' who play their home games at Concordia. You may hear from Lesley Old their team captain, on this website soon.
The next committee meeting will determine the dates for the Handicap Competition (usually late January) and the end of season Closed Competition. Watch out for those dates.
Last season we introduced coaching sessions which were aimed at the newer and novice members of the club however the sessions were only taken up by a handful of determined old hands who just love to play squash.
The club will be looking at coaching one again and wish to encourage those in the lower leagues to come along, the costs are minimal however the club will no longer be able to subsidise those sessions as they had been previously.
The coaching is normally taken by Ray Rycroft, a nationally acredited squash coach who also coaches at Tynemouth Squash Club, it may take a little while to organise, Ray's availability will be an issue.
Roland will continue to run the squash 'ladder' throughout the season however the introduction of the on line leagues and it's easy access and result updates by individual players should make life a little easier for all. Don't forget that there is no longer a 5 point bonus for those who play all there games, the system does not allow it.
Hopefully all games will be played without such an incentive being needed.
The season's new leagues commence on 1st September 2011, please make every effort to play all your league games, general feedback from the leagues last year was that several players made no effort to arrange games and on occassions didn't even return calls from those doing so.
The membership fees remain at £20.00. Prompt payment would be appreciated.
The centre have asked me to remind players that squash club members should also be members of the centre. That is a matter for yourself.
I shall continue with regular updates via the good old e-mail system and notices at the back of the courts.
Enjoy your squash.
Ian McAllister.

Seasons End and Finals night

27/7/2011

Concordia Squash Players,
The summer is here and the squash season has come to a close.
Don't forget that Roland is still running the summer leagues for those who wish to continue with league matches.
In brief, Tony Hedley swept the board as the Handicap and Closed Competition Champion. The Handicap was reported on earlier in the season, the Closed competition finals night was Thursday 21st April when Bruno Gaultier beat Steve Lavery 3 -0 in the 'B' competition and Tony Hedley beat Ian McAllister 3 - 0 in the 'A'. Both those games refereed by Steve Davidson, much appreciated Steve.
Thank you to all those who got themselves involved in the competition. (and the Handicap) A particularly thanks to Derek Railston and Roland Smith who helped to make sure all the games were marked throughout the week.
In the Northumbria league our men's first team were relegated to Division 1 from the Premier league and the men's second team held on in Division 4, both teams having had troubles with injuries often fielding a weakened squad.
The club coaching sessions introduced this year have continued to prove popular and Ray Rycroft is to extend that coaching through the summer.
After a transitionary period Ray now has a routine in place and a regular squad of players receiving group and/or one to one coaching. Anyone interested in taking up the opportunity to receive coaching will need to contact Ray or myself before turning up.
Ray's intention is to offer further daytime sessions during the year, primarily aimed at the youth element, particularly over the summer holidays. He is currently negotiating with the centre about this.
Enjoy the Easter break and lets hope the good weather keeps up throughout the summer.
Ian Mc
